Why NRC Certification is Important

An NRC certification certifies that the accuracy of your Geiger counter has passed strict United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) standards performed by an licensed independent nuclear laboratory.

When you are detecting and measuring nuclear radiation using your Geiger counter, accuracy of that reading is important. Because it is the accuracy of that reading on which you will make your measurement or weigh your decision. Whether it's personal or for work, preciseness is important.

You should not believe any manufacturer's unproven claim of their Geiger counter's accuracy. Because a manufacturer can claim their Geiger counter is calibrated, and has an accuracy of 1%, 5%, 10%, or 20% when measured against their own internal calibration standard. In reality, this means nothing!

So how do you know if a Geiger counter is really accurate? The United States government Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRC) has a set of standard for certifying Geiger counters.

NRC certification can only be performed by a nuclear laboratory licensed by the United States Government to perform such certifications. A Geiger counter is tested against the strict standards set forth by the NRC and if the Geiger counter passes those accuracy tests, it earns an NRC certification.

Without an official NRC certification, you can not be certain that a claim of a Geiger Counter's accuracy is valid.


After NRC certification, a certification label is attached to the Geiger counter and this certification is valid for one full year.






If a seller states their Geiger Counter is accurate, be an informed shopper and ask, "Is your Geiger Counter NRC certified?"

If not, you really need to question if their Geiger counter can pass an NRC certification. To be certain, you could ask, "If I purchase your Geiger counter and send it out for NRC certification will it pass? And if it fails NRC certification, can I return your Geiger Counter for a refund?" The seller's answer will tell you what you need to know to make a sound purchasing decision.
